Mountain gorillas in Uganda live in two main national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These parks are home to more than half of the world’s mountain gorillas. The other gorilla populations live in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage site is known for its great variety of animals and plants including colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, geckos and many types of birds. Mgahinga on the other hand is unique as it’s the only park in Uganda where golden monkeys and mountain gorillas live together. This special harmony between the golden monkeys and gorillas is often described as “Mgahinga, where gold meets silver.” Below are other key differences and similarities between gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi National Park: 1. Size Mgahinga is much smaller than Bwindi covering only 33 sq. km while Bwindi is 331 sq. km. Both parks were created in the early 1990s and are separated by about 50 km of community farmlands. 2. Location Mgahinga is located at the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Bwindi borders the DRC and three districts in Uganda: Kisoro, Rubanda, and Kanungu. 3. Habituated Gorilla Groups Mgahinga has one habituated gorilla group (Nyakagezi) while Bwindi has up to 15 groups. Bwindi also has four main trekking entry points i.e. Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. Many visitors especially those traveling through Kigali or Kisoro choose to trek from Rushaga or Nkuringo as these entry points are closer to the Rwandan border and easier to reach. 4. Trekkin

If you love taking photos and videos from the sky you might be thinking about using a drone during your visit to Uganda’s stunning national parks. Drones can capture amazing views of wildlife and beautiful landscapes. But before you fly your drone in Uganda’s parks it’s important to know the rules and regulations. Let’s take a closer look on whether drones are allowed in Uganda’s national parks and what you need to do to use them safely and responsibly.

Uganda’s National Park Rules

Uganda has several national parks like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. These parks are home to incredible wildlife including gorillas, elephants and many bird species. To protect these animals and their habitats, Uganda has set specific rules about using drones.

Are Drones Completely Banned?

In many of Uganda’s national parks using drones without permission is not allowed. This is to ensure that the wildlife is not disturbed and that the natural environment remains peaceful. Flying a drone without permission can scare the animals and disrupt their natural behavior. It’s important to respect these rules to help keep the parks safe and beautiful.

Getting Permission to Use a Drone

If you really want to use a drone in Uganda’s national parks you can apply for a special permit. Here’s how:

1. Contact Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA): The UWA is the organization that manages all national parks in Uganda. You need to reach out to them to ask for permission to fly your drone.

2. Submit an Application: You will need to fill out an application form. In this form   you should explain why you want to use a drone, where you plan to fly it, and how you will ensure it won’t disturb the wildlife.

3. Follow the Guidelines: If your application is approved you will receive guidelines on how to use your drone properly. This may include rules like keeping your drone at a safe distance from animals and not flying too high or too loud.

Why are these Rules Important?

These rules are in place to protect Uganda’s amazing wildlife. Gorillas for example are very sensitive to noise and movement. A drone flying too close can scare them away or make them anxious. By following the rules, you help ensure that the animals can live peacefully in their natural homes.

Consequences of Breaking the Rules

If you fly a drone without permission or do not follow the guidelines you could face serious consequences. This might include fines having your drone taken away or being banned from the park. It’s important to respect the rules to avoid these penalties and to help preserve Uganda’s natural treasures.

Conclusion

Using a drone in Uganda’s national parks can be a fantastic way to capture the beauty of the landscapes and wildlife from above. However, it’s crucial to follow the rules set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority to ensure that the animals and their habitats are protected. By applying for a permit and using your drone responsibly you can enjoy your aerial photography while helping to keep Uganda’s national parks safe and serene for everyone.  So before you pack your drone for your next adventure in Uganda make sure to check the latest regulations and obtain the necessary permissions.
