About Uganda’s Gorilla Highlands

The Gorilla Highlands are in southwestern Uganda near Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This area is known for its green mountains, thick forests, and rich wildlife. Here you’ll find the famous Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park which together are home to nearly half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas.

Why Go Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is a unique experience that lets you see these gentle giants up close in their natural home. Watching gorillas in the wild is thrilling and deeply touching. You’ll learn about their social lives, behaviors, and the work being done to protect them.

Planning Your Gorilla Trekking Trip

Best Time to Visit

The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry seasons from December to February and June to September. During these months the trails are easier to walk and the weather is more predictable.

Getting Permits

You need a gorilla trekking permit which you should get in advance. The Uganda Wildlife Authority only gives out a limited number of permits each day to protect the gorillas. It’s best to book your permit a few months ahead especially if you want to visit during the busy seasons.

Getting Ready for the Trek

Gorilla trekking can be challenging as it involves hiking through forests and up steep slopes. Being in good shape will make the experience easier. We suggest doing some regular exercise like cardio and strength training in the weeks before your trek.

What to Expect During the Trek

The Briefing

Your day starts with a briefing from park rangers who will explain what to expect, gorilla behavior, and safety tips. You’ll be placed in a small group with experienced guides and trackers

The Trek

Finding the gorillas can take between 1 and 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located. Along the way you’ll walk through different landscapes from dense jungle to bamboo forests following signs and sounds of the gorillas.

Meeting the Gorillas

Once you reach the gorillas you’ll spend an hour watching them. Seeing their interactions, grooming, and playful behavior is a heartwarming experience. Remember to keep a respectful distance, follow the rangers’ guidance and stay quiet.

What to Bring

Hiking Boots: Strong, waterproof boots with good ankle support are a must. – Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a light waterproof jacket. Neutral colors are best. – Gloves: These can protect your hands from plants with thorns. – Walking Stick: Provided by the park, this can be very helpful on slippery paths. – Backpack: Carry essentials like water, snacks, a camera, and binoculars. – Insect Repellent: To protect yourself from mosquito bites. – Sun Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are useful.

Helping Conservation Efforts

Gorilla trekking not only gives you an amazing adventure but also supports conservation. Part of the permit fees goes towards protecting gorillas and their habitat, funding anti-poaching patrols, research, and community projects. By going gorilla trekking you’re helping to protect these beautiful creatures for future generations.
