One of the main reasons people visit Uganda is to see the mountain gorillas. These amazing creatures live in the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. If you’re wondering how likely you are to see gorillas during a trek, the success rate is very high—nearly 95-99%.

Why is the Success Rate So High?

1. Experienced Trackers

Rangers and trackers go into the forest early in the morning to locate the gorilla families. They know the gorillas’ usual habits and follow their fresh trails. By the time you start your trek, the guides already have a good idea of where to find them.

2. Habituated Gorilla Families

The gorilla families that tourists visit are habituated. This means they are used to humans and are less likely to hide or feel threatened. There are over 20 habituated families in Uganda, increasing the chances of a successful encounter.

3. Small Group Size

Each trekking group is limited to a few people which minimizes disturbance to the gorillas and ensures everyone has a good view when the gorillas are found.

What Happens if You Don’t See Gorillas?

Although it’s rare if you don’t see gorillas on your trek some parks offer a refund of a portion of your permit fee or allow you to reschedule. However with expert guides and habituated families the chances of missing out are very slim.

Tips for a Successful Trek

Follow the guides’ instructions carefully.

Wear comfortable hiking gear and be prepared for thick forests.

Stay quiet and respectful during the encounter to avoid scaring the gorillas.

In conclusion, spotting gorillas in Uganda is almost guaranteed making it one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in the world. It’s an adventure worth taking
