Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary established in 2005, is a special place in Uganda dedicated to saving the endangered white rhinos. It was created after poachers killed the last rhino in Murchison Falls National Park. Today Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where visitors can see rhinos in their natural habitat.

In the past Uganda had both black and white rhinos however due to heavy poaching and loss of habitat, rhinos became extinct in Uganda by the 1980s. In the late 1990s the Ugandan government together with the Rhino Fund Uganda (RFU) and other conservation organizations began efforts to bring rhinos back.

The sanctuary started with six southern white rhinos brought from Kenya. These rhinos were well cared for to encourage breeding with the goal of eventually returning them to Uganda’s national parks. Over the years the sanctuary has grown and now has 32 rhinos (as of 2021). Besides rhinos, Ziwa is home to about 40 other mammal species, 350 bird species, and diverse plant life.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary doesn’t just focus on rhino conservation. It also promotes tourism and environmental education through activities like rhino tracking, bird watching, and guided nature walks.

The main attraction at Ziwa is the white rhinos. The sanctuary provides them with a safe and secure habitat protecting them from poachers. Conservationists and park rangers closely monitor the rhinos to ensure they are healthy and safe. With 32 rhinos at the sanctuary visitors can easily spot and enjoy observing them during a rhino tracking experience.

Once rhinos are spotted, visitors can watch them and take photos from a safe distance to avoid disturbing them. The activity takes 2-6 hours, depending on where the rhinos are located.

Bird Watching

Ziwa’s varied landscapes make it a great spot for bird watching. With the help of a guide visitors can explore the sanctuary’s four birding trails to see species like the Shoebill Stork, African Jacana, and Malachite Kingfisher. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced birder you’ll enjoy the vibrant birdlife at Ziwa.

Guided Nature Walks

Guided nature walks allow visitors to explore Ziwa’s diverse habitats up close. Along the way you’ll see various plants, birds, and animals, such as bushbucks and vervet monkeys. These walks are suitable for nature lovers of all ages and help deepen appreciation for Uganda’s natural beauty.

Shoebill Canoe Ride

This unique activity involves a serene canoe ride through the sanctuary’s wetlands in search of the rare Shoebill Stork. Experienced guides will help visitors spot the bird along with other wildlife and bird species. The ride takes about four hours and is a peaceful way to experience the sanctuary’s wetlands.

Night Nature Walks

Night walks offer visitors a chance to experience the sanctuary after dark. With the guidance of a ranger you can spot nocturnal animals like leopards, porcupines, genets, and owls. You’ll also enjoy the sounds of the night and on clear nights, a beautiful view of the stars.
