Gorilla Trekking Experience in Uganda

The majestic mountain gorillas of Uganda live in small family groups deep within the tangled rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. To catch a glimpse of these endangered great apes, visitors must obtain a highly coveted daily gorilla tracking permit. Only a small fraction of permits are granted each day to minimize disturbances.

Early morning treks into the jungle start before sunrise at around 8am from the park headquarters. Your knowledgeable guide will lead you along narrow trails, scouting for signs of gorilla activity like torn vegetation or dung. The forest is dense and temperatures rise quickly, so proper hiking gear and layers are essential. It can take 1-8 hours of hiking to eventually spot a gorilla family high up in the canopy.

When sighted, your guide will signal to approach quietly and slowly. Watching from just 7 meters away, you’ll be awestruck by their immense size and human-like behaviors. Mothers cradle infants, silverbacks assert dominance, and playful juveniles wrestle. They feed on bamboo, fruits and herbs completely unbothered by visitors. Memories of making eye contact with a curious baby while the silverback scarfs greenery will last a lifetime.

After an unforgettable hour of observation, your guide ushers you back through the rainforest trails. Exhausted but elated, legions of trekkers each day agree it was a once in a lifetime experience worth any hardship. To soak in the magic, I recommend unwinding at my favorite lodge, Bush Lodge, situated on a rolling hill above the forest. Savor a gourmet meal on your private balcony as hippos grunt in the marshes below.

Regardless of where you rest your head, the memories and appreciation for these majestic creatures will stay with you forever. With my assistance, all the logistics and permits are seamless, leaving you free to immerse in the wonder of a gorilla trekking adventure that truly lives up to its hype.
